Book Club: Snowmen at Night

Learning about the seasons can be a lot of fun and there are so many great books available to read aloud as a family like Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner and Mark Buehner. In this children's story, our narrator explains why his snowman changes shape at night during an evening of fun.

Science

Explore the real reasons why snowmen change shape over time. Discuss melting and refreezing of snow and water.

Physical Education

There are so many great ideas to incorporate physical activities into your homeschool from Snowmen at Night.

  • Races
  • Skating
  • Baseball
  • Snowball fight – you could even accomplish this inside without any snow by using soft materials like pom-poms
  • Sledding
Materials needed to decorate snowmen

Crafting and Activities

  • Share your favorite winter-themed jokes
  • Learn how to knit a scarf
  • Make a real or pretend hat
  • Make and drink hot cocoa (or let it get cold to see how the snowmen liked their ice-cold cocoa)
  • Build a snowman
  • Decorate a snowman based upon what they like to do at night using my free download!

Snow and Music

Children love music! And there are a variety of snow-related songs beyond those we sing around the Christmas holidays.

Steps

1. Drink milk.

2. Wash out milk container and allow to completely dry.

3. Remove labels. (Sometimes it is easier to do this when the container is still wet.)

4. Create a template for eyes, a nose, and a mouth.

5. Cut pieces from foam.

6. Attach to milk container.

8. String lights inside the snowman.

Safety Note: Be careful about leaving lights on inside your snowman to prevent any fires.

I made a few pieces to create a Frosty the Snowman and Mrs. Frosty for our front step.

To keep them in place, you could place rocks inside of them or tie them down.  I tied our three to the railing.

Crafts: Snowman Names

Snowmen crafts

On New Year's Day, as a family we created our names as snowmen.  I saw the project shared on Facebook and thought it was perfect to create some winter adornments to leave up after the Christmas decorations are taken down.

We used bulletin board letters from the dollar store to trace our names and miscellaneous craft supplies to decorate the snowmen's faces and hats.

It was a very fun project and as my toddler walks by the closet, it has also turned into a learning opportunity as we read the letters and names together.
