Crafts: Cardboard Paper Roll Chicks

For a quick craft, I decided to make toilet paper roll chicks with my two littles. I think these make a great craft for the spring season, learning about chickens, or Easter time. 

Materials 

• toilet paper roll
• yellow paint
• orange construction paper or orange craft foam 
• craft feathers
• googly eyes
• paint brushes 

Steps 

1. Gather all your materials.

2. Paint toilet paper rolls yellow.  My son and daughter used both paint brushes and finger painting.

3. While the paint is drying, cut out the beaks. Just small triangles will do.

4. After your paint has dried, glue on googly eyes, the beak, and feathers.

5. If you wish, you can attach construction paper feet.

Crafts: Fourth of July Hand-Print Fireworks

I discovered this really cute idea from Learn Create Love and decided to try it out with my three children. I used construction paper and pony beads we already had on hand.

Materials 

• Construction paper 
• Pony beads 
• White glue
• scissors
• pencil or crayons 

Steps 

1. Gather all your materials.

2. First, I traced my two littles' hands and I asked my stepson to trace his own hands.  Looking back I would trace each child's hands onto different colored paper (red, white, and blue).

3. Then I glued them down onto black construction paper to create a firework effect after cutting them out.  By cutting them out, I was able to trim and shape the hand-prints where my two littles moved when I was tracing them.

4. Then my son glued beads onto them.  We did this instead of glitter because I am not a fan of glitter. It gets EVERYWHERE! 

5. The finished product - all ready to hang up when it dries.

Busy/Quiet Boxes - Straw

In order to promote my toddler's imagination and quiet activities, after discovering the idea of busy or quiet boxes online, I scoured Pinterest for ideas that I could put into action.

If you are unfamiliar with busy or quiet boxes, they are quite simple and can be implemented in a number of ways. A box can be created for each day of the week (or just the weekdays), bags can be created for each separate activity so you can pick and choose when to share certain activities, or bags can be created that can be taken out to restaurants and shopping trips.

Crazy Straw Threading 

The crazy straws were purchased at a dollar store, while the felt was left over from previous projects.

The goal of this quiet activity is to thread the felt pieces along the straw to promote the development of fine motor skills.
