U is for Umbrella (Blogging through the Alphabet)

Do you have something that provides you with protection or shade? Do you have an umbrella?

The English world umbrella comes from the Italian “ombrella,” which is derived from the Latin “umbella” or “little shade” according to Merriam-Webster.

The definition of an umbrella is “protecting force or influence” or “a device consisting of a circular canopy of cloth or a folding metal frame supported by a central rod, used as protection against the rain or sometimes sun.” Personally, I think people can also act as umbrellas.  They provide protection and influence in our lives depending upon the situation.

My husband acts as my umbrella. He protects me from the elements but does not provide a 100% shield, allowing me to still grow and handle problems on my own.

I hope I will be an umbrella for my children. I want to provide them with protection when they need it but allow them the freedom to experience the elements and problems of life on their own. At some point I know I will need to close the umbrella and let them weather the storms on their own. I pray that I have provided them with the foundation to make the right decisions. I hope they will be strong enough one day to be an umbrella for someone they love.
